OutlanderThis is the first in the series of "Outlander". It is the story of a 28 year old woman visiting in Scotland who stepped through the circled stones and found herself in the mid 1700's. There she met the people she heard and read about and the love of her life. It is a love story and the story of medicine, the Scottish Highlanders, the cruelities of that time. I really am enjoying the series. I started with the last one first because I didn't realize it was a series. Permalink | Book Info | Book Reviews | Buy Book | Update My Log

Watch the accompanying DVD!I started to feel early-on that this book was just a plug for The 7 Habits. Covey seemed completely caught up in his own buzzwords, and the whole thing seemed very repetitive. Then I sat down to catch up on some of the short films (I was a few chapters behind on them). How different they made the whole book seem! Even the ones containing Covey himself added so much to the content I couldn't believe it. I definitely was slogging through, but it was far more worthwhile than I expected - even if it really amounts to another way of looking at his previous work. I do recommend it, but only after completing (and living) The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Permalink | Book Info | Book Reviews | Buy Book | Update My Log

SF adventures from the boardroomI had previously read _As On a Darkling Plain_ and didn't particularly enjoy it. I was pleased to find that Bova's writing had matured (although the characters still seem like cardboard cutouts). Occasionally, the story lurched forward with a sudden jump in time that skipped key events, forcing them to be retold. This was most significant in the final chapter, which completely broke from the former tension and almost didn't seem to match the rest of the book at all. It seemed to me that the climax actually occurred between chapters, leaving me somewhat unsatisfied. Nevertheless, the story was uniquely told and kept me engaged enough that I am moving on into the sequel, _The Rock Rats_. Permalink | Book Info | Book Reviews | Buy Book | Update My Log

A breath ofo Snow and AshesThis long book ( 1485 pages) is the 6th in a series. I didn't know that when I started it and now I have started with the first book. Claire Fraser is a time traveler who goes back to the 1770's. This story tells of the troubles before the Revolutionary War for her family. More useful than enjoyableI'm not crazy about The 7 Habits. The principles are genuinely useful if conscientiously applied, but the book itself is about ten times as thick as it needs to be for the ideas Covey tries to get across. Most of this is annoying anecdotal evidence. Though this is a classic business/self-help book, its ideas have been stated better in other places.
